Ooh look, a whole area that no-one has even written to yet. Let me see...

OK here's a question ABOUT bible study.

I am going help lead a discussion about how to prepare for a small group bible discussion at our church. I have done occasional small group leading now for about 3 years, so have some experience; but I would be really interested in what other people think. What went well, what went badly? Any hints and tips...

Thanks
DG

Hi David

The best bible studies I've been to are those that encourage people to express their opinions. There is nothing I dislike more than seeing someone shy about what they think being shot down without being alowed to explore their idea.

But you're a nice guy so I can't see you doing that.

Absolutely - the other one being a group where one or two people talk so much that others don't get a word in edgeways, so someone who can gentley steer the group in a way that allows everyone to express what they think is a benefit too...

not that I had to learn to just shut up and listen occasionally...

*cough*

I agree but do rememeber that total ignorance of the subject is not a good reason for soe people not to talk.

Beware of people who love the sound of their voices even if they have nothingn to say.

Hi All

Thanks for your comments - sorry I have not replied before; work sort of got in the way of posting here much.

But you are right about trying to get everyone to contribute at some point; I hope I try to steer the discussions rather than lead them, and part of that is knowing what people like to talk about. And our home group is a very open place where no one is ridiculed or looked down upon for asking any questions or airing any doubts. In fact the best discussions come from them.

Hi David,

Like I am not about to state the obvious here.
So wait till I have finished then decide if you really. weally weally!
want to kick me or not.

Why are you starting a housegroup? Will believers be attending?
What do you all have in common?
You all profess Christ but you want to study the Word of God to grow in faith and fellowship together...
If you are led by the Spirit why are you looking for other ways to make the time spent together interesting?  The Lord leads these people as he leads you. Truth is the best place to start. Why not have a sheet printed with what the Word says you should expect to receive from your meetings? Give them a clear idea of what God has promised them they will receive.

Expectation- is the first thing they require. They need to know they will receive. This gives them confidence and leads to building up of faith.

1.) John 16:13-14.

13.Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

14.He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Christs presence being with them.

Let them be assured that Christ is with you and the prayers are answered and the teachings provided.

2.)Matthew 18:20.

20.For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Acceptance that the Word is Truth.
3.)
2 Peter 1:20-21.

20.Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

21.For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

If you get the starting position right and each person has the same truth to begin with, then you will find your meetings are as they should be.
Centred on God through Christ Jesus in Spirit and Truth.
It is only a recommendation for you to receive the most out of your work for God and those with you. If you are united in the truth of what it means to have faith in Gods Word before you read it, then with the expectancy by faith you will receive the truth imparted by the Spirit.

Please feel free to reject or discuss and even take on board.

Love Lynne...xx

What Lynne says is so obvious that it should not need saying. Ceetainly it is a necessry start.  But I do suggest that some planning is desirable.

Matthew 6:33-34.

33.But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

34.Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

If David is seeking Gods Kingdom and so all needs met. Tell me again why he needs to plan. Does God not keep his promises to provide everything for that day and that it is sufficient to that day?
Please correct me if I am wrong but somethings do need saying because the Lord choses to say them. Can you tell when it is Spirit and Flesh?
Is mine Spirit of Flesh?

I am unsure how to reply to you Lynne.

The verse about not taking thought for the morrow refers IMO to getting het up over the future.  Paul says several times that he is planning to go somewhere, did he just drop everything and go or did he make sure he had his clothes packed etc.
There is a school of thought that one should not prepare before preaching derived from the verse that the Sprit will provide. But the verse about not planning and the Spirit providing refers to when one is i court for the faith.

Over fifty years since i received the Holy Spirit has taught me that one has to avoid picking bits of the bible and applying them out of context.

Well if following Christs rule he told the disciples he sent out to take nothing with them no purses or anything. Paul did not work when he went to these places. We see he was sents alms on more than once occasion and he thanks them for these things. Philippians 4: 18.But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.

19.But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Jtheb, you already know I know the Lord. Do you think that I post what I do because I want to enter into personal conflict? No! The Lords disciples are no longer with us but the Spirit of Truth and the Father and Jesus are.

In the last day when you cannot buy or sell will you live by bread or by the word of God? Why do you think that the truth of God is any different today for those in Spirit? Christ took five loaves and three fishes and fed thousands of men and then had 12 baskets left over. How does God provide for those he loves?
Only those not in the book of the living will be take the mark of the beast.
God says his people will die from their heads being chopped off not from starvation...

Love Lynne...xx
