A number of medical breakthroughs in the treatment of diseases have turned out to have a sting in the tail over the course of time, as in some infant inoculations.

I suppose doctors can only try to find a balance in the positive and negative effects.

I just hope you're not talking about MMR vaccinations Len, otherwise we'll have a falling out

I'm afraid my knowledge of the subject is not very specific, Gareth. I  remember many years ago my then neighbours had a child who suffered severe cerebral damage through an innoculation of some sort. Whether it was the one you mention or not I don't know.

It is just that I am aware of the fact that medical knowledge and practices are an ongoing discipline, and as such are sometimes subject to modification.

I am willing to admit I have been on HRT for the last 8 years and have no intention of stopping it. In my case, I was put on it after having an early hysterectomy and in fact my consultant said I was to be on it for at least 10 years.

Up until moving here with Rob, I was almost constantly badgered by the practise nurse at my 6 month check ups to come off it 'because you know....' I pointed out that for women like me, who would have have late menopause, the risks are the same for getting breast cancer whether you do or don't take HRT. Here, I don't get the 6 months check- ups, nor when I have gone in due to bad asthma, has anything been said to me about it.

One day I suppose I will come off it but I will chose that day, I refuse to be scared into it.

Len, you say the child suffered 'through' an innoculation.  Was it actually proved to be caused by it?

The reason I ask is because where I live there were strong 'anti' feelings and I felt very pressured against having my son innoculated, although I did in the end.  There was a lot of skewed information around and I think children (and mothers, and fathers come to that) suffered because of it.  A lot of claims were made but the study 'proving' the MMR link was, as we know, seriously flawed.

Sorry I just feel strongly about this; that is a big claim you are making.  While I know medicine is an ongoing discipline, and an imperfect one, I think it is the best we have and I think making bit claims about cause and effect requires strong proof.

Not to disbelieve you - as you say you don't remember which innoculation.  But was it proven?

Morning BC,

I don't think it was proved conclusively ... nor could it ever be. There is always the possibility that there could be some other cause for it.

We can only trust the medics to get things right, and accept the result that fate deals us.
