Foul Language

I suggest it should be stopped.

Or are you too frightened to ban the poster?
Lexilogio

Which poster and where?
Pukon_the_Treen

He is having a go at Lucifer's Duck I expect.

If a post is abusive, fine it should be removed because we shouldn't be here to insult each other, but don't remove a post because it contains 'foul language'.  The notion is totally subjective anyway; words are just words, they have no intrinsic obscenity in themselves.  Many of the so called 'obscene' ones were once good down to earth factual terms before puerile Victorian prudery made us ashamed of them, forcing us to use pathetically coy, infantile euphemisms or cold Latinised medical terminology.

I 'suggest' we should keep this kind of mealy-mouthed snobbery off the board, and that also goes for any sneaky back-biting like this thread appears to be.

Yes, Puke, you are right about our prudery. One of the things that struck me forcibly on coming to live in Spain was the fact that sexual matters and the human body are discussed far more honestly and openly than I was used to.

I suppose that one could take the advice given some time ago.

If you dont like the filth, stay out of the pig sty.

That is breaking one of the forum rules to start with.

Why should I?

I'll just put up with your grunting, but don't see the need the filth!
Pukon_the_Treen

This is petty.  Get the post removed or don't; there's no need to create a whole thread about it saying, “oooh look what a rotter LD is everybody”.  *edited to remove personal insult*
Rob

Well, you didn't have to join in.

I'll ignore your little insult for now.

Call yourself a moderator?
Lexilogio

I have had about enough of this.

We have light moderation and expect people to behave like adults. If you have a problem with a post - then you need to point out which post you have a problem with. I will only automatically pull people up on posts which break the rules - and I certainly don't have time to be here 24/7 to pay attention to every petty squabble.

Nor for that matter does Admin ban people for minor infringements. Usually when people are banned it is for continual rule breaking. Swearing is not against the rules. Insulting another poster is. So I have edited some of the posts here and will lock the thread.

That last comment was out of line, IMO.

She not only calls herself a moderator, she is one, and she is one because she was invited to be one - by me, because I trust (amongst other qualities) her common sense, even-handedness, fairness and practicality, and very appreciated and valued she is too AFAIC.

We do strive to put in the hours casting an eye over the forum to make sure that things are ticking over smoothly and that there are no infractions of the house rules. Even so, with the best will in the world, we do in fact have lives and families away from nglreturns and it's impossible for us to read every single last post ever made by everybody, ever. Exercise some common sense: if something is offensive, report it. Yes, we may well see it in time, but equally, we may not. We can't catch everything, so we rely on forum members doing their bit to ensure a pleasant forum experience by reporting anything to which they take exception.

There is, incidentally, no specific rule on so-called foul language per se. Racist/sexist/homophobic language is absolutely verboten for obvious reasons, as is directly attacking another poster. But other than that, we like to try to treat people as adults and let them act accordingly. Swearing is so much a matter of personal taste and judgement that I suspect any rules on it are just about impossible to frame, let alone enforce. It bothers some people, it doesn't bothers others, whereas it only bothers some people some of the time depending on context.
