My computer

Dear All,

I have no computer for at least another week because the other one is completely useless now, so I am writing this to say that I am not dead yet!

I tried logging on to Religion & Ethics but could not manage it on the library computer.  I hope I am not missing too much.

See you all soon.

Susan

This is sent thanks to the help of a good friend.
Jim

Re: My computer

Hi, SusanDoris;
I thought you were having problems if you've just installed Dolphin Guide's new upgrade ( v.26). I wish I hadn't, now; I can't access some website pages e.g Ship of Fools community; for some reason the browser takes me straight back to the main menu.
I'm looking for a brick to threaten the damned thing with.
BTW, Dolphin tried their own Guide upgrade on the site - with the same result. At least it isn't just me!
I hope you get a new computer ASAP, and that you're posting again before too long.
Shaker

Hurry back twinkletoes!
Leonard James

OK Susan ... good luck! We will keep the flag flying!

So pleased that you're not

Sorry, couldn't resist a chance to use that emoticon.

Hope all your computer troubles are soon sorted Susan.
SusanDoris

At last! New computer (all set up etc by Dolphin) arrived on Saturday and my son came and wired it all up yesterday. There are going to have to be a few tweaks to the settings, but that can be done bit by bit.

I'm going to have another try at logging in to Religion and Ethics, but if it doesn't work again, I'll come back here and ask what to do.
Leonard James

Welcome back, Susan. We've missed you!
Jim

Susan;
Good to have you back.
Is it a different Dolphin package?
SusanDoris

thank you, LJ and Jim.

the Supernova is the same, but as this is Windows 7  with 'web Live Mail' instead of Outlook Express, I ahsll have to get used to the differences.

I went on to R&E and did the 'forgotten password' route and put in my user name, but no e-mail has yet arrived to provide a new password.  I've got a sighted person coming in first thing tomorrow so I hope that will get things sorted out.

I don't suppose I've missed that much, but you never know!
Leonard James

You've missed nothing, Susan. Just a tired repetition of the old arguments and opinions that has been going on for years.
Lexilogio

Fantastic to have you back, Susan
SusanDoris

Thank you, Lexi!

LJ: could you please ask wigginhall and/or gonnagle to do something to enable me to get back onto R and E? I've had a local tech  chap here this morning, who has re-arranged one or two things on the screen layout, but he couldn't get me back into R&e either.  I really don't want to have to go to the bother of re-registering, so would be grateful for your help Thank you.

Sure, Susan. Have only just got your pm, but will go and talk to them straight away.
Leonard James

Hi again Susan,

Have just sent a pm to Gonners, Wiggy and Oak King who is also a moderator now.

I'll let you know when they answer.

Love,
L.
Leonard James

HI again Susan,

Gonners has answered to say that he sent you a pm telling you that your password is the problem, and that the moderators can't do anything about it as only Jakswan has the passwords.

Have you tried just changing the password?
SusanDoris

Many thanks for all your help, LJ. I'll go to r&E now and try again, including the 'forgot your password' route, and see what happens.
SusanDoris

No luck, unfortunately. I put in my e-mail address and pressed 'continue' and it said 'An error has occurred' and 'There are no usernames associated with that email.'

So I'm flummoxed, and would much appreciate your continued help.

Thank you.
Jim

Susan;
I've just pm'd Oak King on R&E.
Leonard James

Hi Susan,

I've PMd Wiggy again about it, but unfortunately can't send pm to Gonnagle ... he seems to have set his box at off.

Oak King, sadly, can't help at all.
SusanDoris

Jim and LJ
Thank you - much appreciated.

The voice on Supernova doesn't read the smileys either, JHim, but if it did, I'd put a row of 'sad' ones here!!
Jim

Susan,
Strangely, Dolphin Guide reads the smileys on R&E easily enough, but not here.
Possibly because these ones are animated?
As I said, I p.m'd Oak King - he replied that they were working on it.
Leonard James

Hi Susan,

I've just had a message from Gonners asking if you received the pms he sent you on here. Can you confirm that you did and I will tell him? He also asks if you have Jakswan's email address-

He says that everything on your account appears in order, and doesn't understand why you can't sign in.

thank you for writing, LJ. No, I haven't received a pm from gonnagle here and it says 'you have no new messages' on the line of links on these pages. Yes, I am quite happy for him to have my e-mail address. Do you have it, or shall I send it to you in a pm ..... well, I'll do that anyway. I think I did have JakSwan's e-mail address, but what with changing computers, I don't know where it is at the moment.

Quote:

I'll have another go in a minute, but shall be very surprised if things have changed. <sadface>

I've been at the Eye Outpatients dept this afternoon. It appears that the only part - the periphery - of my retina that still works is 'on its last legs'!! However, being an optimist, I just hope it lasts longer than I do!
Leonard James

Hi Susan,

Here is the latest pm from Gonners.

Quote:
Cheers, me and Oak have been on Susans case all day, Jakswan says there is nothing he can do about passwords, they are only for the particular poster, but he can reset them, Susan is a difficult customer because of her visual difficulties, we will get there, when this forum first started Susan had problems, we got there in the end

No, I haven't got your email address, but will pm it to Gonners when you send it.

Sorry to hear about your eyes ... life's a bitch sometimes.
Leonard James

Susan,

I have a suspicion that the pm facility isn't working. I have just sent you a pm ... have you received it?
Jim

Susan;
Firstly, sorry about the retina - been there, bumped into the door frame....
Still, it's still a bodyblow when they tell you.
I've just checked your name in the memberlist at R&E, and sent you a PM there - yes, I know you can't access it, but I wanted to check if things were OK with your account, and the PM registered as sent successfully delivered.
Are you sure your software package is OK? The reason I ask is that I'm having difficulties with my Guide, using it to link on various, but not every, site just takes me back to the menu.
Is it worth getting Dolphin Remote Support in?
SusanDoris

Thank you, LJ and Jim for your continued help. Yes, I'll get Dolphin remote support today if possible. Some tech staff are on holiday apparently and even if Geoff is not - and he's the best - he'll be busy .... and I can't pretend that my needs are more urgent than those in work etc!!

Jim - Do you have guide voice reading punctuation? If so, how much?
Jim

Hi, Susan.
Yes, there is an option on Guide to read out all punctuation, or disable it, just to speak as typed, or, whem I press F3, it will give a letter-by-letter account of the line.
I was speaking to a friend at the local Bind Club yesterday; he's total, but used to be a touch typist. He'd never used a computer before he tried Guide last September; it took him ten minutes to master it, and now he's a lot more advanced than I am. I still tend to reach for the nearest brick..!
I'll keep an eye on this thread; if there's anything I can do to get you back on R&E, I'll read your posts and we'll take it from there.
SusanDoris

Thanks for your post, Jim. I expect the 'read punctuation' option is prettyh much the same as supernova's then.  I've just sent a couple of e-mails to Tech Support with a few more questions - one of which is: 'Can I change back to OE?!'
Gangnoel

Dear Mrs B,

HEEELLLOO, is there anybody there, knock once for yes, twice for no

Susan, what is going on, or maybe I should say Shaker what's happening, how come Susan is not receiving my PM's on here.

Right Susan from the top, what is stopping you logging on to R&E.

First of all remember, Jakswan gave you that phoney email the last time as you did not want anyone seeing your real email, could that be the problem.

Anyway lets see if we can solve your little problem, get you back on the forum.

Gonnagle.
SusanDoris

Thank you for your post, Gonnagle.Yes, I'm here!!

I don't think it can be the new computer, because I'm getting LJ's. All my 'favourites' list from my previous computer, with  all the links, was transferred from the old computer. I get through to JREF and gH with no problem.
During my period of computer deprivation, a friend was going to log me in on her computer, but I don't think that could have affected the problem, because it didn't work anyway, and she didn't go into the 'forgot your password' bit.
Quote:

The first time I tried to log on, I put in my User Name and it came back with: There is no e-mail associated with this name' or something like that. Also it said there was an error with the password. I tried the 'forgotten your password'; but no e-mail came through; I had a local Tech Support chap and he did the 'Answer your secret question' - still
nothing. I don't think I've missed anything out....
and of course, I've tried the User Name/Password multiple times.
Quote:

I don't see how, because JakSwan has, or rather had, my correct e-mail address too. But then, I'm totally non-technical, I'm afraid.
Quote:

Yes, I'd really appreciate that. I miss the philosophy lessons from bluehillside and Outrider, and reading the posts of people like yourself, BeRational etc etc.
Gangnoel

Dear Susan,

I have resent your email to Jakswan by PM and email, but from what you tell me, give me five minutes, I shall return.

Gonnagle.
SusanDoris

I was just gthinking - would it be much easier if you deleted my account completely and I re-registered? I'd make sure to tick the boxes properly at the beginning, so that my 'public profile' was very simple, with no e-mail etc. What do you think?
Gangnoel

Dear Susan,

I can't delete accounts, wish I could, our banned spam list must be up in the five hundreds by now.

Now when you ask for a new password it is completely automated, so I am sorry Susan it looks like it is a job for Jakswan, I have found another email he sent me, one with his real name ( I think he is a member of the royal family ) anyway I will also send him an email with that one, he is an IT  tech sort of guy, so fingers crossed.

And as Leonard says, you are not missing much, just me making a cockup of moderation and Oak and Wigs covering up my mistakes.

Gonnagle.
SusanDoris

I just tried to send the following to LJ, but IE informed me that the page had 'expired'!!!! 'Scuse me, while I write a placard and march up and down in front of somebody's office.

Listening to list of links, I clicked on 'delivered items', instead of cursoring one further to 'sent items'.

At least my broadband is working again this morning - it had an 'outage' about 5:0 pm. yesterday and it still showed as off first thing this morning. However, before doing anything else, I turned off the router, waited a bit and turned back on, and, phew!, it was back on again.

In our younger days, we could never even have imagined such things happening, could we, let alone deal with them!!!
Leonard James

I use firefox, Susan, because I find it faster than IE, but occasionally it bleeps and tells me it can't find a page. I have found that by closing it down and opening it again it goes straight there.

But it's the beta version and they are updating it all the time so I suppose eventually it wil get sorted out.

Modern life ain't exactly a cake walk for us oldies!
Gangnoel

Dear Susan,

Did you receive my email.

Anyway should I ask Jakswan to delete your account, if he can, then you can try and reregister.

Gonnagle.
SusanDoris

Gangnoel wrote:

Unfortunately, no. It's probably something to do with this Windows Live Mail I've now got instead of good old Outlook Express.
Quote:

Gonnagle.

Well, that is probably the best thing to do - I can't think of anything else we can try. Thank you.
SusanDoris

And I must add a grateful thank you to our 'admin/shaker for having this forum here so we can keep in touch.
Jim

OK, it's all a ploy, isn't it?
You just don't want to join in the 'guess what Gonnagle is going to post next" speculation.
Admit it.....
Sorry.
I hope you're back on R&E soo,. but, yes, I agree with you - this is a great forum, though still a little difficult for me to navigate.
However, for the week that R&E was down, I spent time here - and I'm still posting. Shaker, Lexi and co. have done well.
Leonard James

SusanDoris wrote:

Steady on, Susan ... or the old sod will be asking for contributions!

Dear Susan,

Sorry been busy elsewhere, I will contact Jakswan and see if he can delete your account, and yes I will join you in thanking wee Shakey and Lexi for helping to keep us in touch

It's no problem.

I just hope you manage to get it all sorted out.
SusanDoris

As I'm still sitting outside R&E's door, waiting forlornly for someone to let me in !!! I was just wondering whether LJ, Jim or Gonnagle could give me links to a couple of threads in which I can read a discussion including bluehillside and/or Outrider? Just, you know, to keep my brain from atrophying.
Jim

This might sound daft, but why can't you go to the site and scan the topics?

By the way, I've pm'd Wiggs, suggesting that the only way forward is to get Jackswan to delete your account and start from scratch.
Leonard James

Thanks, Jim. Yes, I have read down the topics and browsed through a few but haven't found any with those two in!!
And yes, I look forward to hearing that I'm clear to re-register.

Hi Susan,

Here's one that blue has just posted in.

http://www.religionethics.co.uk/index.php?topic=1451.0

Will look for some more.
Leonard James

Here's another in which both contribute.

http://www.religionethics.co.uk/index.php?topic=1273.0
SusanDoris

I enjoyed reading that; thank you. I would have joined in straight away on that one by saying that, having heard the news, I wondered, being an optimisst, if there's any chance that his intellect would allow him to face up squarely to rationality and logic and admit that of course, there's no God and that to continue teaching such unevidenced pieces of information is wrong, wrong, wrong..

I'd have agreed with bluehillside's opinion of John Sentinu, who has, I think too high an opinion of himself and I'd be seeing 'beware of this man' signs in my mind's eye and would feel inclined to put up a poster or two on the subjecgt!

And of course I like your #92.

Thank you for the other link. I have read page 36 and will follow from there! I find alan's posts very difficult to wade through!!
Leonard James

Hi Susan,

It has occurred to me that until you gain access, if you want to contribute to a thread, you can always do it here and I will copy it to R&E in your name!
SusanDoris

That's kind of you to offer, LJ, but it wouldn't really work, I don't think!

I've just started reading the RD thread and I want to respond to nearly every post!!!!
SusanDoris

Well, here I am, almost at the end of another week without being able to get on to R&E. I've just tried again with the 'forgot your password' link. No e-mail arrived. I am a very patient soul, but surely this is getting way beyond a joke?

Please, please wigginhall and gonnagle, pleas do something!!
Farmer Geddon

Susan - why not just re-register, as say Susan_Doris for example...

... or have they stupidly put a block on your e-mail address for some reason?

It'll be a slightly different name (in Farmer's example he's added an underscore), so the system won't say "sorry, this name has been taken", but we'll all know it's you.
SusanDoris

FG

It's hopeless <sadface>
I managed the captcha code by listening, but when I clicked on 'Register', it just went back to same page. No notice about e-mail acceptance, or anything.
Ketty

Susan, you're now being asked after on R & L.  You're missed.
SusanDoris

Ketty

thank you for letting me know!
there are certainly one or two topics there that I'd be in on if I could.
I'll try again today, but I must say I can't understand why JakSwan seems unable to,or uninterested  in?, helping. Maybe there is some reason, and I'd be interested to hear if so.

OK - failed again. this time I listened to everythingfrom the top after clicking on registering and being taken back to the same page and this is what it said:

The following errors were detected in your registration. Please correct them to continue:That email address .... is being used by a registered member already. If you feel this is a mistake, go to the login page and use the password reminder with that address.

be interested to hear if so.
... and I've tried that too before now. Okay, I'll go back and have one last try.
Result: 'An e-mail has been sent....' but my e-mail page is open and nothing arrives. I'll go and look at my ISP web page inbox, but don't hold out any hope that that wil help.
Ketty

Susan - it would be wise if you edit your post above in order to remove your email address.  Leaving it so easily readable on a public message board is leaving yourself open to all sorts of spam and unwanted communications.

Once an email address has been registered with a Message Board, it cannot be used again.  When I was having problems here, I had to set up yet another email address - I'm now here (on NGLr) with three log in names (Ket, Ketty, Keturah) and three different email addresses.    Two of them are throw away addresses which I cannot now remember the log-in details.  If I ever forget my password again, I'm stymied because I've know idea which name relates to what email/password combination.

I hope Jakswan replies to you soonest.  It's not un-sort-out-able, but it needs somebody with the keys to open the door.
SusanDoris

thank you again, Ketty. I have removed e-mail address.
I shall neeed help if I am going to set up a new e-mail address, but I really would rather not do that, especially since the solution would surely be to delete me completely so that I can re-register; the work of a minute for IT people, I imagine.
I'm an incurable optimist etc but do find myself getting a tad fed up by being unable to get in to R&E!!!

ETA Have read posts on R&E about me. Please will you say that I say thank you and will be back just as soon as I can be. I'll give it another day or so, then I'll get my neighbour to lend me a hand with an alternative e-mail address.
Ketty

Susan I've posted your message.

It's very easy to set up a new email address using gmail.

https://accounts.google.com/Servi...t&ltmplcache=2&from=login

http://www.gmail.com

At the top right of the screen there's a big red button to Create An Account . . . click on that and follow the instructions.  I'm able to do it for you if you'd like, but then you'd have to change the password I'd set up for you.
Ketty

Susan, I took it upon myself to create a new email for you - I've PM'd the details to you.  Please change the password soonest!
SusanDoris

I've read pm. However, I wonder how I will receive the confirmation e-mail? No rush for answer just for now - I'll puzzle it out later!  Must get organised for my visitor now.

Have you checked your spam inbox as well? Your email filter may have misidentified the reminder emails as spam and sent them there.

I do hope this is going to work out now ... it's quite idiotic that's it's taken so long.

Looking forward to seeing you again on R&E.

L.

I have looked at the web site and read your pm, but I'm afraid I do not know what to do to get that new e-mail address organised. I would be most grateful if you could please post here a list of very simple, step by step
instructions?
I have never done anything like this before - and have had the same e-mail address - originally set up for me by Dolphin - since I first had a computer.
Jim

SusanDoris,
I've just had a pm from jakswan on R&E.
Your account has now been deleted. You should be able to start again from scratch. If not, I can post you the appropriate sized brick!

Thank you, Jim! Registered>>notice came up: Registration successful... e-mail will arrive>>so far no e-mail>> heart sinks to boots again, and I checked the Spam and Junk files
It's about 20 minutes now and these things usually take only seconds, don't they. I'll post this now anyway. What shall I do if no e-mail arrives I wonder?
.
Gangnoel

dear Susan,

PM me on here your email address, you, you, wonderful woman.
Gangnoel

Dear Susan,

Try your account now, go on now, yyyeeeeeehhhaaa.

Gonnagle.
Gangnoel

Susan post something on R&E or I am going to, well I am just going to, have another drink I suppose, put me out of my misery are you back or what.
Jim

What do you mean ANOTHER drink?
Fortified tea.......again?
Gangnoel

Dear Jim,

Susan is bloody driving me to drink, Susan is back on R&E, if only she would post something, so I could see it is all sorted out.
Leonard James

I gather she is following instructions and waiting for the email confirming her membership! WTF is the good of having instructions if you don't have to follow them?
Jim

Gonners,
If you jumped back to R&E, you'll see I pm'd her there. The pm was OK, so presumably the account is live.....I hope!
SusanDoris

I've just b een over to R&E to see what topics I would be posting in if I could  and have seen your topic, gonnagle  -
thank you - much appreciated!

I don't suppose there is anything else I can do at the moment - I'd probably mess up the system if I tried to repeat the registration or something.

However, I've just been looking again at this page and see that gonnagle says I should register...so, crossing my fingers, here I go....

Jim - that is interesting about the pm.

gonnagle - shall I try registering, even though I haven't received a confirmation e-mail?
SusanDoris

Well, it is very nice indeed to be back with everybody -I'll be busy this weekend catching up!

And hooray for ngl too!

My supernova software is going to need some tweaking, but I'll get that done by dolphin tech Support - remote control - next week.

Susan!  So sorry I've been out all day.

If you log into hotmail dot co dot uk using the information I gave you in the PM, ie the email address and the password - that's all you need to do.  The account is activated and ready to go.  The only thing you need to do is to change the password once you're in.

If you don't use the account it will simply be closed after time.
SusanDoris

Ketty

As I am now back on board the jolly ship r&E, I think I'll do nothing further with the hotmail link, as I can't think of any other use for it just at present. However, I'll know where to find this info if the need arises.

I've been to T'...o's and put all the shopping away, so can now spend the day glued to my chair here!

thanks again.
