Playing rugby 'can cause early onset dementia'

A neuropathologist has linked the onset of premature dementia with the playing of rugby, a causal link attributed to the prevalance of repeated head injuries.

Should rugby playing, and by extension other dangerous activities such as boxing and sky-diving, be banned?

It might be sensible if all rugby players were required to wear protective headgear. I would ban boxing, it is a horrible sport, which is aimed at knocking the opponent out.

Why would you ban boxing when, by all appearances, those who take part in it are competent adults who give their informed consent to do so?

Surely if the head gear helps to protect head injuries that would be a good idea?

As for boxing, young boys take part in this activity not just adults!
Powwow

If a person has their heart set on having their heads knocked around, well, all the power to them. Perhaps they should have their health insurance premiums doubled at least. And for places with free health care, like here, they should have to pay premiums again every month to the government for their future medical costs.

However, I believe it is true, this link with head bumps and dementia. On the doctors orders we forced dad to retire off the farm and moved him and mom into the city. Over several years he took several hits to the head. Some of them making him pass out. The ones I recall were having a tree limb hit him, a couple times one of the cows got him with their horns and a nasty one with lots of blood happened when he was under the combine making repairs. So the doctor saw dementia coming and ordered him off the farm. It did come and I wouldn't wish that future on my worst enemy.

In the US, NFL players wear helmets & use them as weapons. The number of head injuries are roughly comparable to Rugby.

Rugby, a game played by gentlemen with odd shaped balls.

What would be your view on the legalisation of knife fights, or duels to the death with pistols at dawn?

I assume you mean that the participants of these activities freely consent to them, and that the knife fight you mention isn't some brawl down a dark alley after chucking out time?
