Pope: Church should be open to same-sex civil unions

Marriage is still for owners of foo-foos and tinkle winkles - no surprises there - but the Pope says the Church could tolerate gay civil unions:

Quote:
"Matrimony is between a man and a woman," the pontiff told the Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera in an interview published Wednesday and translated by the Catholic News Service.

But moves to "regulate diverse situations of cohabitation [are] driven by the need to regulate economic aspects among persons, as for instance to assure medical care It is necessary to look at the diverse cases and evaluate them in their variety."

I suppose the fact that marriage is also a civil affair (and in this country has been since January 1st 1837 - in other places earlier) didn't occur to him, but baby steps, baby steps ...

But he didn't say 'marriage'. He said 'matrimony'.

You might not be aware of this but Pope Francis has not spent his entire clerical career in the Vatican.
