Purge of new but inactive members?

Lately we seem to be acquiring a number of new members who seem to have made it clear that they have absolutely no intention of contributing anything to the forum, since in one case there was about one (IIRC) post from such a member and in the other cases absolutely no posts at all. It's nobody's place to tell anybody how much they should post, but when somebody signs up and contributes absolutely nothing at all, what's their point in being here?

We can all speculate freely on the reasons why this may be so, but since these members have gone to the bother of registering so that they can read the entire forum but can't be bothered to post anything, perhaps there should be a clear-out? Maybe there should be a probationary period after registering - if there are no posts made within that period the account closed and deleted? That grace period may be 28 days or 90 days or any point in between, I have no idea.

Agreed.
The Boyg

I was under the impression that Lexi was already doing this.
IvyOwl

I was going to suggest that an introductory post should be a condition of full membership plus a probationary period where a certain number of posts should be made.

So was I.

I think it sensible that new members should be required to introduce themselves, and take a fairly active part in the forum, or forfeit their membership.
Ketty

I don't know for sure but I suspect redfred's already been culled and it must be entirely coincidental that there's been a very recent visit of *ahem* others.
Jim

Sock it to me?

Personally I wouldn't go for a certain number of posts as that's akin to enforcing how much people should post, which in my fairly long experience tends to make people merely come out with fatuous, trivial guff to ramp up the post count.

redfred dropped by very recently (at time of writing) but once again declined to pass comment on anything.
Rose

He probably joined, had a look at the areas he didn't have access to, as a non member, and thought better of it!

Ketty's stalker like posts, badgering him to introduce himself, would have been enough to scare him off, if nothing else did!

Creepy!

He couldn't look at the areas he didn't have access to, by definition. And thinking better of contributing to a forum on the basis of the areas one doesn't have access to (and can't see) is downright bizarre.

Two hello and welcome posts four days apart constitutes stalking and badgering?

Perhaps it's just shit-stirring again. Still, you must be over the moon that Ketty contributed anything at all to the "Welcome redfred" thread, otherwise you would have had no excuse to have yet another go at her, no matter how asinine.

No wonder you think disagreement equals bullying. It must be an incredibly sheltered life you lead where everything is ramped up past normal bounds.

You can't count!

3 whole pages and more than two posts from Ketty!
Any new poster would not understand references to the police, so would have no idea how to interpret Ketty's post showing a sign saying police / and in Welsh with a little wavy smilie!

Plus other posters asking if they come from Wales.

It would be enough to put a new poster off!

There are enough weird scams on the Internet to fall foul of, and I think because you all seem to think any new poster is really Ralph, you all scare any genuine new poster off!

They don't know what's going on do they?

It must look really odd to a totally new poster, and probably makes them wonder what they are walking into!

Chill out!
Julie

Ps he wouldn't have had access until he joined, but once he did then he would have read all the rest of it!

I did indeed miss one. So, so far we have:

Ketty wrote:
Welcome Redfred.  Pull up a chair and tell us about yourself.  How did you find us?

(I assume this counts as stalking or badgering to you?)

Four days later:

Ketty wrote:
Redfred, are you shy?

Arrant harrassment, no doubt. And the one I missed, five days later still:

Ketty wrote:
Aw, c'mon redfred.  It's obvious you're around and in our midst - why join if you're not going to post?

Are we into stalking and badgering territory yet?

No but we are into creepy territory.......

Really?

I'm surprised you're allowed to use the internet.

You really can't stand back and see how that thread would appear to a genuinely new poster, can you?

With it's references to Wales, the Police etc.

None of those things would make any sense to a new poster and they wouldn't know how to take it, other than perhaps they were being set up!

If you want make people feel welcome, don't saddle them with references to old posters and chill out a bit!

Like I said, the overall impression is creepy!

That's one interpretation - yours, unsurprisingly. Alternatively a genuinely new poster would find such references incomprehensible, might ignore them and join in regardless, or ask about them. The references to Wales and the police only came after (days after) sundry people had said hello and encouraged the supposedly new poster to join in.

Those references were made for a reason, though you don't seem to know what that reason is.

To you, apparently.
Lexilogio

I do cull those who don't post. I usually give them a week or so, to see what happens first.

I didn't know.

A week? Blimey - Madame Whiplash or what, even my first thought was 28 days

Lol. It depends on my general sense about the account. There have been some barely make it to 24 hours - when its obvious the account is a bot.

I've deleted some of the welcome threads for deleted accounts too.
Shaker

True - bots are generally pretty easy to spot, though.

I don't care why people think that!

It has nothing to do with a new poster, whatever has happened on here is not their problem.

When was the last time you had a new poster?

If you come across as too judgmental in how others post, you could put them off posting altogether!

Only if they're as much of an over-sensitive little flower as you purport to be, in which case they're better off going elsewhere.
