Religion - Alcohol Analogy

I don't know whether someone else has come up with this, but it occured to me that religon is in many ways like alcohol.

Used responsibly it can have minor health benefits and can help your social life.

Used irresponsibly it can lead to anti-social behaviour, violence and severe degradation of judgement.

Children should be supervised in it's use and only allowed to use it in moderation.

There are special places for its use.

People often get frowned at for using it in the street.

It's inappropriate to use it in work or at school.

Although, there are some differences: you get taxed on alcohol, the queen is not the head of a brewery, and there are no seats for brewers in the house of lords.

If you think of any more, please add them.

You can make your own, which will give you a marvellous sense of achievement, but it will be a bit weird and you shouldn't be too surprised if no one else wants to try it.
Andy

Hmmm, and whilst some are happy sipping Jacobs Creek, others prefer Chateau Lafite Rothschild.

I'll leave it to you ugly lot to figure out which denom is which.
Pukon_the_Treen

It can make you believe you are making perfect sense, but all everyone else hears is gibberish, unless they are under the influence as well, in which case you still can't really understand each other but you feel like you're the best best mates in the world, sharing something profound.

:smt044

It generally makes you happy, but some can become guilt ridden and morose...
northernstar

It can make you thick skinned and feel invincible............
Shaft2101

Quality thread ... it really is a pretty good analogy
Shaker

And then there's the haemorrhoids analogy, of course - fiddle with them in private if you must, but at all costs resist the temptation to tell others about them.
Illuminatio

Too much religion is habbit forming !

Great to see you hear lumi - you've been missed buddy. We may not agree on all things, but you do make me laugh
Shaker

I can't think of anything that Lumi and I actually agree on other than a shared partiality for aerobic respiration and the conversion of glucose into adenosine triphosphate, but I'm delighted to see him back again and hope he sticks around. We need the target practice.
Illuminatio

Thanks Shaft  Smilie_PDT

Its nice to see you guys again.

Hey Shaky boy  :P

Oh we agree on many things, Muslims , Evangelicals, Jews,  infact the whole jolly lot of false religions should be banned.

We differ of course on Truth, that being a Catholic thing

You must be confusing me with somebody else: that description - tantamount to antisemitism - doesn't match my thoughts at all. I don't think I've ever held that any religion be banned, even if they are all false.

Differing on truth being a Catholic thing? Yeah, they've always been like that
Illuminatio

I did say protestants and muslims too  ;-)

I am not Mel Gibson

Shaker

Barquing mad as ever, bless him!  Smilie_PDT

The more religion people have, the more they want. But too much and they start seeing and hearing things that aren't there.
Shaft2101

Surely there are some good puns on "spirit-filled" to be made on this thread?

Or have they already been made?
