Religious affiliation in the USA continues to dwindle ...

Part 3,146 of a regular series ...

Quote:
A new survey shows that the Great Decline of religion in America continues. Since 2012, the U.S. has about 7.5 million Americans who are no longer active in religion.

Last week, the 2014 General Social Survey (GSS) was released. The GSS is the gold standard for sociological surveys. Funded by the National Science Foundation this multi-million dollar study gives us the most accurate data on American society — including religion.

The 'nones' are growing:

When asked their “religious preference”, nearly one-in-four Americans now says “none.” Up until the 1990s, this group of so-called “nones” hovered in the single digits.  The 2014 GSS showed that the so-called nones are 21 percent. How large is this group of nones? There are nearly as many Americans who claim no religion as there are Catholics (24 percent). If this growth continues, in a few years the largest “religion” in the U.S. may be no religion at all.

The number of Americans who never darken a church door is also at a new high. Over a third of Americans (34 percent) never attend a worship service (other than weddings and other ceremonies). This is a 3.4 point increase from just a few years earlier. Put differently, the group of Americans who don’t attend church grew by a rate of over ten percent in two years.

Bottom line: the number of Americans who are no longer active in religion reached a new high in 2014. Since 2012, about 7.5 million Americans more Americans don’t attend attend church. Millions also stopped identifying with any religion or praying.

One hopes it does dwindle because religious observance seems to be much more extreme than is generally the case in the UK.

Yes, there is indeed that. The USA has been quite anomalously religious when compared to sophisticated and civilised European nations (for example) until very recently.

That - thank goodness - is now at last changing for the better.

But for myself, I don't particularly care exactly why it dwindles, just so long as it does dwindle.

Which, thank goodness, it does and continues to do. That's what counts.

I'm not particularly interested either way, tbh.

No but thanks for letting us know that you're not

Is it not of importance to you - indeed, of supreme importance if you think that your beliefs are actually true - that as many people as possible believe in that particular brand of Christianity which you happen to espouse?

Christianity, being one of those tedious, tiresome and boring missionary, evangelising and proselytising religions, seems tremendously, indeed feverishly bothered that other people believe its ridiculous claims, as do all religions (usually monotheistic) which go to great lengths to insist that they and only they have the final, absolute and inviolable truth about everything. Why are you not?

Meh! The 'falling away' is Biblical.  It's inevitable.  It seems to be more of interest/curiosity to unbelievers rather that those of us who are disciples of Christ and who know this is all prophetic.  The only thing of supreme importance, in this sense, is the fact we're a step nearer to Christ's return.

Doesn't say much for the Great Commission, does it?

It is what it is.  We can only do what we can do.  Those who choose Christ are already chosen.  For those who have no desire to choose Christ, or who blaspheme Him and metaphorically crucify Him again and again, or who look to man rather than the Lord, then for them the Great Commission means diddly squat.
