Twitter

NGLReturns is now on Twitter as.... NGLReturns!

I've signed the account up to follow a few people I knew would be interesting, and some were pure guesswork. Its signed up to follow Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, C of E, Vatican, Anglican Communion, Greek Orthodox Church, a couple of Rabbi's, Giles Fraser, Ship of Fools etc... Oh - and Russell Brand.....

If you are on Twitter - please let me know - or follow NGLReturns & I'll set the account to follow you back. I'm still learning the Twitter system, but we could extend the debate - and bring some news back here. If nothing else - we might encourage some new members....
Ketty

Thanks Lexi.

Can we please have an 'How to' guide for Twits?

No, seriously.

What about setting it to follow Big Brother (for Ralphie) and Real Housewives for me?
Lexilogio

Well - if you want to hear about them, you need to follow them. The list on the NGLReturns account is partly so I can keep an eye on a variety of sites - and so the links are easily found if other people wish to follow some key religion twitter accounts.

How to Twitter?

1. Sign up.
2. Bear in mind that anything you post may be available to the whole world. Largely, other people won't be interested, but if they follow you, they can see what you post. If you want to stop wierd people you don't know from following you:
Click on the little head icon in the top bar, go to settings, scroll down, and to tweet privacy, and click "Protect my tweets". That way, only those you agree are allowed to follow you can do so.
3. Tweets can only be 140 characters long - so be concise.
4. Repeatedly sending the same message, or sending offensive twits, particularly to famous people, is considered spam, and could result in your twitter account being removed. If someone spams you, you can block them:
Click on their account - and then on the head in the middle bar (next to "Follow"), you can then choose to report them to twitter - or block them entirely (they will not be able to read your tweets, or follow you)
5. You can attach pictures to a tweet through a number of applications. Twitpix is the easiest, and can be downloaded onto your phone for instant tweeting after you've taken the picture.
Ketty

That's really helpful, thanks Lexi.

So . . . if I have an account, I can work out how to follow (I think), but

1) how does one Tweet somebody?
2) how does one post one's own Tweet?

1. To tweet someone directly you include @followed by the name, eg. @NGLReturns. However, if @NGLReturns is following you, they would see the tweet anyway. But using @NGLReturns would send the tweet directly to that account, and others wouldn't normally see it (unless they click on your profile and then go to @Mentions to see the conversations you have.

2. You post a tweet by:
a. Click on the blue box in the top bar - the one with the square and quill
b. On the left hand side, click in the text box which has the grey "Compose a new tweet" and write it in there.
Once you have written your tweet - don't forget to click "Send"
Lexilogio

I found this site - http://www.brentozar.com/twitter/
to be really helpful ....
Jim

My software package won't work on twitter.

That's a shame - could you ask them if they could update it to allow twitter?
Jim

We've tried, Lexi; apparently the present package of Guide ( 6.0.33 ) is the last of the version 6 upgrades - unless Windows throw another spanner in the works necessitating another patch.
The next version - presumably Guide 7 will probably come out next June at the earliest. It could cope with twitter.
( Or so they tell us )

I shall look forward to you signing up then
Farmer Geddon

The only problem is; like facebook, most people use their real self to post on such sites.

Most here want to stay anonymous for whatever reason.

I can't be arsed making a false account, so if I do join you get me warts and all...
Lexilogio

Feel free to do either. I have a twitter account as Lexilogio - so its easier for me.

If you are concerned about privacy, I would recommend creating a new Twitter account, possibly with your username here.

If you connect on Twitter, FG - we can clink glasses (I have a bottle of red open...)
Farmer Geddon

I'm not bothered Lex - I have been fairly open about who I really am on here..  In fact allow me to be the first to follow your account...

Farmer Geddon

Oh and don't forget - each post has to be 140 CHARACTERS or less!!

Which will be a bugger for the verbose!!

Thanks!

I watched that Russell Brand programme about addiction.  It was very good.   I like that Nigerian proverb too. "If you think you have someone eating out of your hands, it is a good idea to count your fingers."

I thought the Russell Brand programme was excellent. I'd never really watched him - but he's remarkably intelligent, there was a great deal of compassion and common sense in what he was saying. And that statistic about people coming off drugs on methadone being less than those with no treatment
Ketty

I've always enjoyed Russell.  Despite his off the wall-ness, I could see his underlying compassion and intelligence, and love of people, and a recognition of the ridiculousness of 'life'.  I was really sorry when his marriage failed.  It's a shame that girl only stayed three weeks in rehab.  I would have loved a good ending to all of that.

Tbh, I was not surprised at the stats re Methadone.  Imho it's only total abstinence that can ever work for those with a brain hard-wired for addiction.
Farmer Geddon

Why are you chatting about it here - take it to the twitteratii?
cyberman

I will follow as long as you promise never to retweet anything by that collossal arsehole Russell Brand.

I'll try not to. I never liked him - but was seriously impressed with that documentary. I wonder if he's better when he's not trying to be funny?

I doubt it - but really don't want to find out. He is a typical upper class yahoo who gets his kicks out of upsetting other people. Nasty bit of work.

I thought I would give Twitter another go and see if I can get on with it this time around!
Jim

I never regarded you as a twit, Willow!

( Why does a Gilbert & Sullivan song come to what's left of my mind when I write this? )

How kind!   Sadly I can be a very silly twit from time to time!

Excellent

I must admit, I'm quite enjoying it. I'm finding out loads of news before it hits the TV.

I am one of your followers, Lexi.  I must be careful I don't get so engrossed I neglect my chores, we still have what seems like a million pictures to hang in our new gaff!

I've managed to work out who you are - but there are a couple of others who are now following who I'm not sure who's who, or, if indeed, they are from the forum.

Someone is posting newspaper stories from French and Spanish newspaper agencies - which is interesting reading.

NGLReturns is also now being followed by the Japanese company KTV. Does this mean we are truly global?

I am one of your new followers. I am following Lexi, NGLReturns, Farmer and Willow. (I am MP).

I do follow a French language newspaper from Belgium, but don't think I retweeted any yesterday, and I know no Spanish, so that wasn't me.
gone

Ah I wondered who MP was!
Lexilogio

We are getting more followers - and finding more to follow on Twitter.

We are now being followed by St Pauls' Cathedral - who have had a service tonight to celebrate the Paralympians. The canon was trying wheelchair basketball before the service.

Meanwhile, the Pope has apparently said that insincerity is the work of the devil.
Lexilogio

I read an article about companies that measure your social media influence.

Apparently the social media influence of NGLReturns is 15. The average is 40, so not very influential as yet

If you want to measure yours, I used Klout. For those with a Facebook account, it will use that as well.
Farmer Geddon

Talking of fb - I drunkenly started a Group page for NGLReturns..

https://www.facebook.com/groups/358160707593698/

I added Richard Carrier, Earl Doherty and Robert M. Price as members, because I thought it would be funny...

Robert M. Price wasn't impressed and sent me a scathing message, but Richard and Earl seem to be OK with it!!

Just added Sam Harris, wonder if he will be as anal as RM Price?

I've now added the Twitter feed to the webpage - which would be great if I could find it outside of the Admin panel - but alas, I can only see the forum front page. Will keep looking.
Lexilogio

Have now managed to add it to the index....

That's very impressive lexi
Lexilogio

Thanks. Am quite chuffed. Still doesn't look as professional as I'd like - but I'll work on that another day. I think I'd have to edit the forum template, which is a bit scary, as I could break it completely. (she says, with a slightly wicked grin...)
