Yep!

Are you proposing that the universe would be a 'better' place if the laws of physics were suspended each time they were about to produce a result which was detrimental to members of one particular species?

I'd have thought the universe would be a better place if said laws had been framed in the first instance in such a way (a) as to render any such intermittent suspension unnecessary by (b) not creating sickness and disease to begin with. As impossible as it it is to take seriously, I've heard that some people actually purport to believe that the laws of nature were consciously and intelligently designed by some sort of entity not only conscious and intelligent - indeed, infinitely intelligent, according to them - but supremely benevolent. For those who believe in such whimsical fatuities surely they would have to criticise said entity for creating the laws which allow pain, misery, sickness and suffering? Since an infinitely good entity would not wish to create the universe this way, and an infinitely knowledgeable entity would know how to make things otherwise, and an infinitely powerful entity would be able to do it. So if you're absolutely determined to do the conscious, intelligent entity business you're left with only (a) well-meaning but incompetent or (b) ignorant or (c) downright malevolent. And so on and so forth.

It's an old, old saying so I'm certainly not claiming originality for it - just that it's true - but it's so often been said that if this is the best that so-called omnipotence, omniscience and omnibenevolence can do, well ... a phrase involving the words 'whelk' and 'stall' springs to mind.

Perhaps you disagree?
