So now that we have a formal debate bit, perhaps we should be suggesting stuff to debate - and volunteering someone to do it?

I couldn't agree more.

I see I'm late adding my 'yes', 'cos it's up and running already.

Not quite Ket - it's up, not so much "running" as yet

I've been toying with the idea of introducing a feature to nglreturns which I've seen (and seen work very successfully indeed, at its best) on other sites, namely, a formal debate section where two and only two members on opposite sides of a particular issue agree to debate said issue back and forth. The debate would be for those two members only, without input from anyone else - for others to be able to comment on the ongoing debate a new but separate thread can be created. Some sites impose a limit on the length of each reply (say, a maximum of 1500 words at a time), others don't, but the idea is that two members agree to debate a particular issue fairly strictly. Only those two members contribute and they take it in turns replying and rebutting the previous post until both parties agree by mutual consent that the debate has ended.

Any thoughts, troops? Does anybody like the sound of it and if so, does anybody have any ideas as to what they'd like to see debated?

Hi Shaker,

I like the idea, but it seems to have had difficulties getting off the ground.

What I would suggest is that a strong topic is selected for discussion ( like abortion, for and against) and a limited number of posters are selected with strong views on either side.

Say two or three on each side.

The topics could be selected by suggestions and could be strong topics that people feel strongly about.

abortion, animals used in the creation of medicine, hunting, really strong topics that clearly can have two sides.

This might encourage people to keep the threads flowing.

If you advertised the subject beforehand people may let you know if they want to be among the debaters.

Julie
