Today is the day that the Eastern Orthodox church celebrates the life of Gregory the Dialogist - known to everyone else as Gregory the Great. Pope Gregory is regarded as a saint in most Christian communities - the only difference is the day that his life is celebrated.

Gregory was born into a wealthy Roman family, but had a deep respect for monastic life. After his father's death, he converted the family villa into a monastery.

Today is St Joseph's day - the day when people remember Mary's husband, and Jesus' adoptive father.

I forgot to post yesterday:

21 March is the day the Church of England celebrate the life of Thomas Cranmer. Thomas was the Archbishop of Canterbury, who was the driving force in starting the Church of England, and establishing it's rites - at the behest of Henry VIII. Thomas was executed for treason by Mary. He had, during his two years imprisonment, reconciled with the Catholic church, but famously recanted prior to excecution, and died a heretic to the Catholic Church, and a protestant martyr.

2oth March was also St Cuthbert's Day. One of my personal favourites - especially popular in my region, North East England. From my living room I can see Holy Island, where he used to knock about.

23 March was the day Catholics celebrate the life of Turibius of Mongrovejo. Born Mayorda de Campos, in Valladolid, Spain, St Turibius went to the University of Salamanca, became Grand Inquisitor of Spain under King Philip II, then ordained as a priest, he became Archbishop of Lima, and arrived there on May 24 1541.

Today in the Church of England, we celebrate the life of Harriet Monsell.

Harriet founded the Community of John the Baptist in 1852, and was it's first Mother Superior. The Community helps marginalised women, single mothers, the homeless and sex trade workers, by providing shelter and teaching them a trade. In 1874 a branch was founded in the USA.

The Community is still going strong, and the current community hope to move into new accommodation in Cuddleston in 2011.

Today is the day of St Isidore in the Catholic community.

St Isidore was Archbishop of Seville in the first century. He was considered a scholar. However, his views on Jews were.... well, they are unreasonable now. His Canon 60 called for the removal of all Jewish children from their parents, and Canon 65 banned Jews from holding public office.
