But outside church I am falling deeper and deeper in love with Orthodox Church music from the Russian/Ukranian tradition - all unaccompanied, ranging from simple chants to gloriously rich works by people like Rachmaninov. In fact his Vespers (All Night Vigil) is a good place to start. Like Andy I have this on my phone and listen to it often on the way to work - well recommend this work.

Absolutely - it's one of the most beautiful works in existence. If you liked that, you'll love his Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, op. 31. (And that link is to the version I have, by the Kansas City Chorale). Wondrously lovely. The Cherubic Hymn at the end of disc one is beautiful beyond my power to describe.

Also on my phone  Smilie_PDT And so I have just plugged in my earphones and sat at my desk at work trying not to cry while listening to it (music does this to me). For me, "We will praise[hymn] thee" on cd 2 is the indescribable one - where the treble/soprano solo soars in over the top of the other voices is truely numinous.

I was lucky enough to hear the Vespers live at the Proms this year - quite marvellous.

I have also visited the Ukraine and listening to singing in the monastaries and churches there and the surroundings and situation, took the music onto another plane. I would recommend http://cdbaby.com/cd/chamberchoir5 or http://cdbaby.com/cd/chamberchoir4 if you want to listen to more (the first one kicks off with three tracks from Rachmaninov) - and this website has many more to choose from!!

I listen to a lot of Christian bands. Hillsong United is one of my favorite bands and I love their song “Oceans”. There’s just something very soothing about their music.
