I think it was Schopenhauer who pointed out that there's simply no need to posit the existence of devils and demons and hells and whatnot: human beings alone are more than capable of perpetrating every kind of hideous unspeakable evil without any supernatural assistance.

A statement of the bleeding obvious, perhaps.

Just as obvious as the fact that people are capable of unbelievable acts of love and altruism without any supernatural help.

The problem arises in trying to convince people that since neither gods nor devils are necessary for either activity, such entities are superfluous.

Only superfluous if one has a theology where the primary purpose of God is to make humans behave well towards each other.

Do you know of any religions like that Len?

No, I just know that as far as I am concerned gods are as superfluous as the religions which peddle them.

So nothing to do with whether or not people behave better or worse as a result of the belief in their existence then.

In which case why did you suggest that the lack of a requirement for the existence supernatural gods in order to improve human behaviour was the reason why such entities are superfluous?

Can't be Len, Satan isn't an atheist. He used to be a close, personal friend of God doncha know.

Actually, I can only think of one person on here who claims to have such a personal relationship with The Almighty.
