So what was the best film of 2012? Or at least the best one you saw?

And what was the best documentary of the year?

In my estimation Skyfall was absolutely outstanding. I didn't believe the hype but went to see it nonetheless and came away feeling that those who had been touting it as the best Bond film ever were absolutely right. By the end of Pierce Brosnan's tenure as 007 (nice chap but only a reasonable actor) I thought that the Bond franchise was dreadfully tired and in need of a drastic overhaul if it was to remain interesting, fresh and relevant, and with the advent of Daniel Craig it got just such a reboot (even to the extent of going back to basics with Casino Royale, the very first Bond novel). Even without the accumulated weight of fifty years of cultural history that we all share Skyfall was just a bloody good film and I enjoyed every second of it.

The Oscar nominations are out:

Best Picture:
Life of Pi
Amour
Argo
Lincoln
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Silver Linings Playbook
Django Unchained
Zero Dark Thirty
Les Miserables

I haven't seen ANY of them.....I'm getting so boring!

Neither have I ... but then I wouldn't see all of them anyway. Life of Pi doesn't appeal at all (I've had the book for years and haven't read it to this day); I haven't even heard of Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty; I can't stand most musicals so Les Miserables would never be on my to-see list anyway. I would love to see Lincoln and would probably go and see Django Unchained given the chance, but that's it.
